Garden of Ios

A Star on an Epic Movie Set

If walking through the impressive entrance gate to Ios’ latest gastronomic venue makes you feel like a star on an epic movie production, it is hardly surprising. German-born owner and creator Anina Diener has years of experience as a production designer for both films and events. But, whereas up until now all her extravagant creations were of an ephemeral nature, turning this former private property into a bar/restaurant has offered her an opportunity to pour her creativity into something more lasting.

Giving Back to Ios

More importantly, Anina created this space to give back to her beloved island of Ios and its inhabitants. Her parents fell in love with the small Cycladic island in the early sixties, creating a lifelong connection for her. She firmly believes, “If you spend such a lot of time in one place, you can’t just take; you also have to give back.”

Beyond the Landmark Gate

Beyond the landmark gate, designed in the style of classical Cycladic architecture by masterful local craftsmen, a magical place awaits you. A huge cluster of mirror balls glistens in the last rays of sunshine, casually strewn between the carob trees. Did the wind blow them here straight from Studio 54, or did they fall from the incredible night sky over Ios? Either explanation seems plausible, but in actual fact, they are a typical “Anina touch,” embellishing the DJ booth and meant to look “like a baroque dress.”

Attention to Craftsmanship

The handmade neon sign above the bar area is another recurring design element of Anina’s. Its Greek letters were blown in Berlin using a traditional technique, not industrially made. Craft matters to her.

An Inviting Garden Atmosphere

Atmospheric music lures you deep into the garden, where, among the pines and prickly pears, a variety of seating areas invite you to rest from the hustle and bustle of town. Cozy, intimate spots make single travelers and couples feel just as welcome as larger groups.

Luckily, the charming staff serves you fresh water as soon as you settle in, so you can take your time choosing the perfect drink to enjoy while admiring the breathtaking sunset.

Signature Drinks and Local Wines

Maybe one of the signature cocktails crafted by Athens’ “Kolokotroni 9” bar, inspired by the four elements? Or perhaps a natural wine from Jérôme Binda’s “Domaine de Kalathas”? You could even opt for a refreshing Garden of Ios herbal tea. Whichever your choice, it will certainly be the perfect prelude to a delicious and healthy dinner in the restaurant.

Sustainable and Organic Dining

Chef Constantinos Kardaras rose to the challenge of preparing food with seasonal, local, and organic Greek ingredients while avoiding the use of plastic. The dishes, served on minimalist dinnerware created by Tinos-based ceramicist Sabrina Binda, are gluten-free and free from refined sugar, preservatives, and additives.

“What we do is the opposite of convenience food,” says Anina, for whom sustainability is key. Wherever possible, ingredients come from her own fields or the garden itself, newly planted by Anina in large parts.

Harvesting Nature’s Bounty

The garden now yields olives, figs, pomegranates, lemons, apricots, grapes, and herbs, alongside the almonds and prickly pears already present. Anina, whose parents created an impressive private garden on the island, knows the challenges of planting trees in an environment with little water.

The creator

Art Meets Craftsmanship

“Researching, harvesting, mixing, trying out, elaborating, presenting – that’s art combined with craftsmanship.” These words define the philosophy of Anina, the founder, owner, and creator of the Garden of Ios, Agora Café by Garden of Ios, Bib Shop, and the museum “A Journey to Ios.”

Inspiration Rooted in Ios

Anina’s connection to Ios runs deep. Rooted in the island since childhood, she draws inspiration from the Aegean Sea, the golden stones, the sun, and the island’s strong energy and free spirit. Feeling a deep sense of gratitude toward Ios, Anina channels her passion into giving back to the place she calls home.

A Visionary with Diverse Expertise

With a background in high-end private and corporate events, Anina transforms dreams into reality. As an award-winning film scenographer, her passion lies in creating sensory-engaging spaces. Her love for gastronomy began early, managing a school café at just 16 years old.

During her time at the Beaux Arts in Dijon, France, Anina gained access to the exclusive world of Burgundy’s greatest wine families. This rich experience shaped her appreciation for quality and craftsmanship, which is evident in all her ventures.

A Creative Legacy

The four establishments under the Garden of Ios brand reflect Anina’s vision and philosophy. Personally managing every detail of design and architecture, she views them as the culmination of her 30 years of creative work. From conceptualization to execution, Anina handles everything – the vision, architecture, furnishing, planning, and even recipe creation for her signature sweets and tarts.

A Solo Accomplishment

In response to comments suggesting, “there must be 10 Aninas around,” Anina clarifies that she has accomplished everything alone. From researching and sourcing objects to collaborating with producers, every aspect of her projects reflects her personal touch.

A Multifaceted Artist

In addition to her work in hospitality and design, Anina also thrives as a Film Production and Costume Designer, showcasing her ability to combine creativity with meticulous execution in every field she explores.
